Sri Lanka Crisis : Overnight resignation of Cabinet; PM Rajapaksa stays

Owing to the ongoing crisis, the entire Sri Lanka cabinet has resigned, except for Sri Lanka PM Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Colombo, Apr 4 : Owing to the ongoing crisis, the entire Sri Lanka cabinet has resigned, except for Sri Lanka PM Mahinda Rajapaksa. The decision was taken as a response to the increasing rage among the Sri Lankan masses regarding the ongoing economic crisis in the island nation.

The entire cabinet signed a general letter informing about the resignation, making way for a new cabinet to be constituted as soon as possible, to take control of the economic crisis. Reports suggest that the process of constituting a new cabinet is in progress and it will soon be confirmed within a few days.

The Sri Lankan executives and legislatives are falling one after the other like dominos. The resignation of Sri Lanka cabinet comes a day after resignation of Namal Rajapaksa, Former Sports Minister of Sri Lanka and son of PM Rajapaksa, from all his portfolios.
 
 
 
 
 
The Former Minister made it public through a tweet stating, "I have informed the sec. to the President of my resignation from all portfolios with immediate effect, in hope that it may assist HE & PMs decision to establish stability for the people & the govt of #LKA. I remain committed to my voters, my party & the people of #Hambanthota."
 
 
Sri Lanka is currently facing its worst economic crisis, that is estimated to have caused due to shortage of foreign exchange, which was an effect of restricted tourism during the last two years of the COVID 19 pandemic. Sri Lanka is largely dependent on the income that comes through tourism. Approximately 12 per cent of the country's GDP is earned through tourism.
 
 
 
Sri Lanka President had declared a national emergency on Apr 1, to ensure 'public security and maintenance of public order'. Recently, there have also been speculations that the worsening crisis will soon result in PM Rajapaksa's resignation too, however, the Sri Lanka PMO termed such speculations as 'false' and cleared that there are no such plans at present.
 
 
The people of Sri Lanka are looking at the ongoing economic crisis as a complete failure of the government to manage the policies. The sentiment of betrayal by the governing authorities had brought the people on the roads in huge masses protesting against the government. The entire island nation is presently under a public curfew.
