Kohima, Apr 5: Nagaland officially gets its first woman representing the state in Rajya Sabha today, as S Phangnon Konyak sworn in as a legitimate member of the Parliament. The Parliamentarian was elected unopposed to represent the state in the upper house of the Parliament.
The elections for the vacant seat in Rajya Sabha for the state of Nagaland was due Mar 31 as the tenure of the previous Rajya Sabha MP from Nagaland KG Kenye was to end on Apr 2. However, since there was only one candidate till the last date for filing nominations, there seemed no need to conduct a poll. As a result, S Phangnon Konyak was declared as elected unopposed, making her the first woman from the North eastern state to be elected in the Parliament’s Upper House.
Konyak is the president of BJP Nagaland Mahila Morcha and is also the first Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) member from Nagaland to be representing in the Parliament. The moment is historic for the state socially as well as politically. Konyak herself thanked everyone through tweet stating, "Grateful to everyone for the support Specially to our Party central leadership & State Government of the day led by Hon’ble CM, Dy. CM and all UDA partners."
The Ministry of Development of North East Region congratulated the new parliamentarian publicly through a tweet stating, "#NariShaktiofNorthEast Makes Proud!!! KUDOS Ma'am...Your advent to #RajyaSabha will inspire #YoungIndia to be the part of parliamentary process & bring reforms for the welfare of people. Best of luck on all your future endeavours"
