The division bench comprising of Chief Justice Pankaj Mithal and Justice Moksha Khajuria Kazmi responded a PIL (Public Interest Litigation) pertaining to the deportation of illegal migrants from Myanmar and Bangladesh. Sunil Sethi, Senior Advocate appearing from the petitioner's side said that the PIL was filed so that those who were legally residing in sensitive union territory like J&K should be deported.

During the proceedings, it was noted that the govt had constituted a group of ministers earlier in 2017, to look into the issue thoroughly and compile a report. However, it never happened, while the former state underwent constitutional changes due to its bifurcation into two distinct union territories, at the same time, resulting in further delay.

Senior Advocate Sunil Sethi also submitted that the govt needs to come up with a complete mechanism to identify such illegal migrants staying in J&K, while the list is submitted to the court.
