President Gotabaya announces important changes amid enraged protests

Gotabaya Rajapaksa said steps will be taken to amend the Sri Lankan constitution to re-enact the contents of 19th amendment to further empower the parliament.

Colombo, May 12: Sri Lanka President Gotabaya Rajapaksa made several announcements in a go amid enraged protests in the crisis struck island nation. President Rajapaksa said that steps will be taken to amend the Sri Lankan constitution as well as he will appoint a new Prime Minister within a week.

Gotabaya Rajapaksa said steps will be taken to amend the Sri Lankan constitution to re-enact the contents of 19th amendment to further empower the parliament. He also mentioned that a person who has the trust of the majority of parliamentarians and the people will be selected as the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka and appointed within a week.
 
 
 
 
 
He shared through a tweet, "Steps will be taken to form a new gov to prevent the country falling into anarchy and to maintain the affairs of the state that have come to a halt. A PM who commands majority in Parliament and is able to secure the confidence of the people will be appointed within this week." He further mentioned in the thread, "The new gov will be given the opportunity to present a new program and empowered to take the country forward. Further, steps will be taken to amend the constitution to re-enact the contents of the 19th Amendment to further empower the Parliament."
 
Gotabaya also tweeted, "Calls from various factions for the abolition of the executive presidency will be considered. With the new government and their potential to stabilize the country, we will have an opportunity to discuss this and work towards a common consensus. I humbly request assistance in maintaining the uninterrupted function of the state machinery in order to protect the lives of the people and their property. To maintain continuous supply of essentials without allowing the country to collapse at any point in time."
