Kutta, May 21: The Karnataka police have arrested a pastor couple named Kuriachhan and Selvi for forcing a tribal Hindu couple to convert to Christianity in Kutta. The couple was remanded in 14 days’ judicial custody. The couple are from Mananthavady in Kerala.
This incident happened on the day when the anti-conversion ordinance became law in Karnataka. Even though the anti-conversion law has been notified, local police said that they haven’t received any information yet to book the pastor and his wife under the new law. They have been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for now and will later be charged under the new law based on the instructions of higher-ups if necessary. Police have been booked under Section 295 A, which is the existing law against forcible conversions.
According to the reports, the pastor couple was caught red-handed while trying to convert Paniyaravara Mutha, a tribal, and his family. The couple gave the bible to the Mutha and asked them to pray along with them.
As per Mutha, the pastor and his wife tried to convert them to Christianity in the same way they converted his nephew and niece-in-law earlier. The nephew and his wife have been visiting a church in Tholpetty, a village in neighboring Kerala’s Wayanad district regularly.
The pastor couple from the border district Wayanad has been visiting the coffee estates in Kodagu district often and converting many families. Shockingly, the pastor couple has converted more than 1000 tribal people working in coffee estates of Kodagu district.
