US condemns Nupur Sharma's remarks on Prophet Muhammad, says 'promote respect for human rights'

Washington DC, June 17: Making a comment on India's internal matter, the United States condemned former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma's inflammatory remarks on Prophet Muhammad and said it encourages India to promote respect for human rights.

It also welcomed the BJP's condemnation of Nupur Sharma's comments. While speaking to the media, State Department spokesperson Ned Price said, "We condemn the offensive comments made by two BJP officials and we were glad to see that the party publicly condemns those comments."
 
"We regularly engage with the Indian government at senior levels on human rights concerns including freedom of religion or belief and we encourage India to promote respect for human rights," he added.
 
 
 
Back on May 26, Nupur Sharma made controversial remarks about Prophet Muhammad and his youngest wife during a TV debate sparking massive protests across India.
 
Many Islamic countries condemned the inflammatory remarks by Nupur Sharma. In a damage-control mode, the BJP suspended Sharma as well as Naveen Kumar Jindal, another party leader who was accused of making similar remarks on Prophet Mohammed.
