Earlier, in this month, National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval attended the BRICS NSA meeting in a virtual format and stressed the need to bolster cooperation against terrorism without any reservations. In May, External Minister Dr S Jaishankar had attended BRICS foreign ministers' meeting which was also hosted by China.

He had said, "BRICS has repeatedly affirmed respect for sovereign equality, territorial integrity and international law and we must live up to these commitments." This came in the backdrop of the India-China border conflict along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh. New Delhi has consistently highlighted the importance of territorial integrity and sovereignty.

Speaking of the recent development in terms of terrorism, China has blocked a joint proposal by India and the US to list Pakistan-based terrorist Abdul Rehman Makki as a global terrorist under the Al-Qaeda Sanctions Committee of the Security Council. It should be noted that he has been involved in raising funds, recruiting and radicalizing youth to violence, and planning attacks in India, especially in Jammu and Kashmir. It is pertinent to mention that Makki is the brother-in-law of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) chief and 26/11 mastermind Hafiz Saeed.

Apart from this, India has blocked a proposal to proscribe an Indian national, Gobinda Patnaik Duggivalasa under "UNSC Sanctions list for terrorism". This came after Pakistan failed to supply adequate evidence to UNSC 1267 Sanctions Committee.
