Marathi actor Ketaki Chitale granted bail a month later for a post against Sharad Pawar

Mumbai, June 23: Marathi actor Ketaki Chitale was granted bail by the Thane sessions court in connection with the FIR lodged against her last month for allegedly posting a defamatory poem on Facebook purported to be against NCP chief Sharad Pawar. She is likely to be released on Thursday.

In May, Chitale allegedly shared a poem on her Facebook, attributed to another person, that mentioned only a surname (Pawar) and an age (80). But it also referred to physical ailments the 81-year-old NCP chief suffers from.
 
Chitale told court that police hadn't complied with laid down procedures while arresting her. Her lawyers Ghanshyam Upadhyay & Yogesh Deshpande also said that the Bombay HC had, granted interim bail to Nashik resident Nikhil Bhamre, who was also arrested for allegedly posting a defamatory statement. The HC had restrained police from arresting Bhamre in two other FIRs till further hearing in his plea after 3 nweeks.

Chitale had last week approached the HC seeking quashing of 20 FIRs against her. She was granted bail in connection with a case filed by Rabale police for offences under Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

Her plea said that the Kalwa police should have given her notice under Section 41A of Criminal Procedure Code, which mandates that the investigating officer would have to issue a notice of appearance before an arrest is made.
