Google has honored renowned Indian physicist and mathematician with a doodle today, as it was on this day in 1924, that Satyendra Nath Bose sent his quantum formulations to Albert Einstein, who had termed it as a significant discovery in quantum mechanics.

Einstein did recognize the significance of the discovery, and soon applied Bose’s formula to a wide range of phenomena. Bose’s theoretical paper became one of the most important findings in quantum theory. He was also appointed as National Professor, the highest honor in India for scholars.

Bose is best known for his work on quantum mechanics in the early 1920s. The Government of India also recognized Bose’s huge contribution to the field of physics by awarding him Padma Vibhushan - one of the highest civilian awards in the country.

Bose went on to serve as president of many scientific institutions including Indian Physical Society, National Institute of Science, Indian Science Congress and the Indian Statistical Institute. He was also an adviser to the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, and later became a Fellow of the Royal Society.

In honor of Bose’s legacy, any particle that conforms with his statistics today is known as a boson. Many scientific breakthroughs have come from his work including the discovery of the particle accelerator and the God particle.
