President of Tanzania Samia Suluhu Hassan has thanked the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Government of India for funding projects worth over $500 million aimed at resolving the water crisis in the east-African nation.

"We are heartened by the support given by the Indian government to our country," she said at an event. She requested Binaya Pradhan, High Commissioner of India in Tanzania, to convey her gratitude "to the people and the government of India". "A friend in need is a friend indeed. So, thank you very much," she said.

It should be noted that during PM Modi's visit to South Africa in 2018, India and Tanzania signed several agreements, including a loan of $92 million (nearly Rs 612.1 crore) for water projects in Tanzania's semi-autonomous Zanzibar islands.

It should be noted that Tanzania has been dealing with a severe water crisis for decades, and despite efforts by governments and independent organisations, 4 million people still lack access to an improved source of safe water. According to Unicef, nearly half of its six-crore population does not have access to clean drinking water.

To resolve this, Tanzania has lined up water supply projects in 28 towns, of which 24 will be funded by the Export-Import (Exim) Bank of India to the tune of $500 million. Last month, Tanzania’s Minister for Water, Jumaa Aweso, said that the country will soon be implementing water projects as a priority next year.
