Maharashtra police summons Nupur Sharma & Naveen Jindal for questioning

The Thane Police had booked Sharma based on a complaint filed by a madrasa teacher, who alleged that his religious feelings were hurt by what Sharma said in a TV news debate.

Mumbai, June 9: Thane Police summoned former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma to appear before it on June 22 in connection with FIR lodged against her for allegedly making derogatory remarks against Prophet Mohammad.

The BJP had suspended Sharma and expelled another BJP leader, Naveen Jindal, for making derogatory remarks against Prophet Muhammad. The Thane Police had booked Sharma based on a complaint filed by a madrasa teacher, who alleged that his religious feelings were hurt by what Sharma said in a TV news debate.
 
 
Police has also summoned former BJP politician Naveen Jindal for questioning in a case related to his remarks on the Islamic prophet Muhammad. The summon was issued by Bhiwandi Police Station Thane. According to the summon, he is asked to appear at the Bhiwandi Police Station on 15 June at 11:30 AM.

A senior officer said, “As part of the investigation into the FIR registered against Sharma, we have issued a notice under Section 41 (A) of the Criminal Procedure Code, which is a notice of appearance before a police officer. We want to record her statement in connection with the investigation and get her side of the story.”

The FIR had been registered by the Mumbra police in Thane on May 30. Mumbai Police Commissioner Sanjay Pandey had on Monday said that in due process, they, too, will summon Sharma to record her statement.

In Mumbra case, complainant Mohammad Gufran Khan has said that on Saturday, he received a link of the news debate – in which Sharma participated – on the Gyanvapi mosque issue on his WhatsApp number. He alleged that when the comments made by Sharma on the Prophet and his wife in the link hurt his religious sentiments.

He filed a complaint with the Mumbra police station, where an FIR was registered against Sharma under sections 295 (A) (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs), 153 (A) (B) (punish persons who indulge in wanton vilification or attacks upon the religion, race, place of birth, residence, language etc of any particular group or class or upon the founders and prophets of a religion), 298 ( deliberate intention of wounding the religious feelings of any person) and 505 (statements conducing to public mischief) of Indian Penal Code.
