Muslim man held for rape, forced conversion in Maharashtra's Latur

The accused proposed to the victim in October 2018, then forced her to convert her religion; After this, an agreement was made on a bond paper.

Latur, July 16: A man was arrested for allegedly raping a woman on a false promise of marriage and forcing her to convert her religion in Maharashtra’s Latur city, said the police.

Reports say, the police arrested Arafat Laik Khan (32), a resident of the Zinganappa lane area of the city, deputy superintendent of police Jitendra Jagdale said.
Based on the complaint lodged by 27-year-old victim, a case under section 376 (rape) and other relevant provisions of IPC and Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 has been registered against arrested accused and 7 members of his family, he said.

According to police, the victim had a shop in the same shopping complex as the accused and they got acquainted with each other & got into a relationship.

The accused allegedly took the victim to an apartment in a residential building, where he raped her. However, the accused later arranged to marry another woman, the police said.

When the victim went to the accused’s house and demanded an explanation, his family members threatened to kill her. A further probe is currently underway.
