It is a celebration 113th Birth Anniversary of the famous Malayalam Poet Balamani Amma, who is fondly called the Grandmother of Malayalam Poems. 1. A woman born for Women: Balamani Amma was born on 19th July 1909 in the small town of Punnayurkulam in the state of Kerala. . From her childhood, she never believed in the norms of a patriarchal society. And at a very early age, she decided to rebel. She started writing her poems to inspire other women like her. She belonged to a generation of poets who rebelled against the patriarchal norms including Durga Bhagwat, Lalithambika Antarjanam, Mahadevi Verma, and Amrita Pritam.

2. Naivaidyam: Her principal collection: Naivaidyam is her celebrated collection of thoughtful poems. In this collection, she examines the misery of women and their many positions as beloved, housewife, mother, Durga (the angry goddess), working woman, servant maid, and grandmother. For this, she even received Saraswati Samman in 1995.

3. Mother of Kamala Das: Balamani Amma is the mother of renowned poet and novelist Kamala Das. Kamala has always spoken about her mother. She says, her mother reflects on her writings. She even translated some of her mother’s poems, “The Pen” is one of them, which depicts the loneliness of her mother.

4. Achieved many honors including Padma Bhushan: Balamani Amma was a celebrated poet not in only Malayalam Language but worldwide. She has achieved many honors and awards like Saraswati Samman, Sahitya Akademi Award, and Padma Bhushan Samman. Malayalam poets still look up to her. 5. Her husband was also a famous journalist: Balamani Amma married VM Nair the managing editor of the widely circulated Malayalam daily Mathrubhumi, at the age of 19. She was too young when she got married. She also wrote her first famous poem at age of 21. After two years of being in a marriage.
