New Delhi, July 26: On the 23rd anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas, President Draupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday paid heartfelt tributes to Kargil War 1999 soldiers and who sacrficed their lives. The day marks the historic victory of the Indian Armed Forces in Operation Vijay 1999 when they elminated Pakistan Army invaders from high outposts in Ladakh's Kargil.

The President, who took office a day ago, said she “bows down” to all the “brave soldiers who laid down their lives to protect Mother India.” She further said that all the countrymen will be “indebted to the soldiers and their family members”
 
“Kargil Vijay Diwas is a symbol of the extraordinary valour, might and determination of our armed forces. I bow to all the brave soldiers who laid down their lives to protect Mother India. All the countrymen will always be indebted to him and his family members. Jai Hind!,” Murmu wrote on Twitter.
 
 
While paying tribute to the soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice in the Kargil war, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said, "Kargil Vijay Diwas is a symbol of pride and glory of Maa Bharati. On this occasion, my salute to all the brave sons of the country who have accomplished their valour in the defence of the motherland. Jai Hind!"
 
 
As many as 527 soldiers from the Indian Armed Forces sacrificed their lives during the 60-day Kargil war. Kargil Vijay Diwas is observed on July 26 across the country to commemorate the Indian heroes who valiantly fought and sacrificed their lives to make 'Operation Vijay' a success.
 
Around 140 posts and pickets were established by regulars of Pakistan Army, over a frontage of 100 km up to a depth of 8 km inside Indian territory over months in 1999.
 
The story of the Kargil War is written with the blood of young officers and men. This day also commemorates the sufferings, compassion, and fortitude of their loved ones. For the widows, the wait of the husband; for the children, wait of father, and for the fathers, wait of the son is yet to get over.

The supreme sacrifice of Capt Saurabh Kalia with five brave Jat Soldiers, Capt Vikram Batra, Capt Manoj Kumar Pandey, Maj T Sarvanan, Capt Vijayant Thappar, Capt Anuj Nayyar, Capt Hanif-ud-Din, N/Sub Chuni Lal and many others are Golden Glaring Example of laying down their life for the motherland. So many died in oblivion. It was the end of everything for those who lost a husband, a father, or a son. What more a nation can expect from its soldiers?
 
War if thrust upon, must be fought on Enemy Territory. Unfortunately, this cardinal principle was not applied in the Kargil War. To take the war to enemy territory involved crossing the LoC. Had this option been exercised, the victory would have been faster. It would have shown India as a strong nation which takes bold decisions and consequent risk such as it did by a ‘surgical strike’.

Despite restraints, the army evicted the intruders and regained the lost territory, albeit, at a very heavy cost. Kargil War will always be remembered for its Strategic and Tactical Surprises, the self-imposed National Strategy of Restraint in keeping the war limited to Kargil Siachen Sectors, and the swiftly executed Tri-Services Military Strategy and Plans.
