The accused, Pathan, who was kept inside barrack number 7 was attacked on Wednesday by fellow inmates who have been identified as Kalpesh Patel, Hemant Maneria, Arvind Yada, Shravan Avan, and Sandeep Jhadav.

Umesh Kolhe, a chemist in Amravati city of eastern Maharashtra, was stabbed to death on June 21 when he was returning home after closing his shop.

The 54-year-old was murdered for allegedly sharing a post on some WhatsApp groups in support of controversial comments made on Prophet Mohammad by now-suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma in May during a TV debate.

Pathan is among the 7 who were arrested by NIA in the case. All the accused are lodged in Arthur Road jail.

The agency, which took over the probe into the case from the Amravati police, brought to Amravati from Mumbai two of the 7 accused and recreated the sequence of events that led to the alleged murder Kolhe.

NIA had earlier taken over the custody of all the 7 accused in the case. The alleged main accused of the case is Shaikh Irfan Shaikh Rahim.

The agency had earlier told the in-charge NIA court in Mumbai that the case was of very serious nature and had national as well as international ramifications.
