PM Modi speaks to UN chief over attack on Indian peacekeepers in Congo, urges quick probe

Two BSF personnel, who were part of the UN peacekeeping mission in Congo, were killed on Tuesday during violent protests.

New Delhi, July 30: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday spoke to António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) regarding the death of two Border Security Force (BSF) personnel in Congo. He urged the UN chief for quick investigations to bring the perpetrators to justice.
 
Two BSF personnel, who were part of the UN peacekeeping mission in Congo, were killed on Tuesday during violent protests. The two soldiers were part of MONUSCO - the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the DR Congo.

"Spoke to UNSG @antonioguterres to discuss the shocking attack on the UN Peacekeeping Mission in Democratic Republic of Congo, in which 2 brave BSF personnel lost their lives. Urged quick investigations to bring the perpetrators to justice," PM Modi said in a tweet.
 
 
In a press statement, it said, "Both leaders discussed the recent attack on the UN Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO), where two Indian peacekeepers were martyred."

It stated, "Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged the UN Security General to ensure expeditious investigations, to bring the perpetrators of this attack to justice. He underscored India’s abiding commitment to UN Peacekeeping, with more than 2,50,000 Indian peacekeepers having served under UN Peacekeeping Missions so far. 177 Indian peacekeepers have made the supreme sacrifice while serving in UN peacekeeping Missions, the largest by any Troop Contributing Country."
 
Further, it added, "UNSG offered his condolences to the families of the two martyred Indian Border Security Force personnel, as well as to the Government and the people of India. He reiterated his unequivocal condemnation of the attack against MONUSCO and assured all possible action in conducting speedy investigations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also underscored India’s unwavering support to peace and stability in the Democratic People of the Congo, where nearly 2040 Indian soldiers are presently deployed at MONUSCO."
 
Two BSF personnel killed in Congo
 
According to international media, at least five people were killed and about 50 others injured on the second day of demonstrations in Congo's eastern city of Goma against the United Nations mission in the country.
 
BSF said, "DG BSF & all ranks express condolences on the sad demise of HC Shishupal Singh & HC Sanwala Ram Vishnoi on 26 Jul 2022, deployed with UN Peace Keeping Contingent (@MONUSCO) in Democratic Republic of Congo. Prahari Parivar stands by their families in these trying times."
 
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had also expressed grief over the incident. Taking to Twitter, EAM S Jaishankar said, "Deeply grieved at the loss of lives of two valiant Indian peacekeepers of the BSF in the Democratic Republic of Congo. They were part of the MONUSCO. The perpetrators of these outrageous attacks must be held accountable and brought to justice."
