CJI NV Ramana recommends Justice Lalit as his successor, to become 49th CJI

As per convention, the incumbent CJI recommends the name of his successor only upon receiving the communication from the Law Ministry urging him/her to do so. The CJI personally handed over the copy of his letter of recommendation to Justice Lalit.

New Delhi, August 04: As Chief Justice of India NV Ramana is scheduled to retire on August 26, NV Ramana has recommended the name of justice UU Lalit, the most senior judge as his successor and next 49th Chief Justice of India.

CJI Ramana retires on August 26 following which Justice Lalit will take over as the 49th Chief Justice of India. He has a short tenure and will remain in office till November 8, 2022.
 
 
 
Uday Umesh Lalit is a Judge of the Supreme Court of India. Before his elevation as a judge, he practised as a senior counsel at the Supreme Court. Justice Lalit is the 6th senior advocate ever to be directly elevated to the Supreme Court.
 
Senior-most judge of the Supreme Court Justice U U Lalit, who is in line to become the next Chief Justice of India (CJI), has been part of several landmark judgments including the one which held the practice of divorce through instant 'triple talaq' among Muslims illegal and unconstitutional.
 
If appointed, Justice Lalit will become the second CJI who was directly elevated to the apex court Bench from the Bar.
