New Delhi, September 13: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Monday ordered a CBI investigation into the death of Haryana BJP leader and content creator Sonali Phogat. The 43-year-old was found dead in Goa last month.

The MHA's decision has come after Goa chief minister Pramod Sawant wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah requesting a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). While speaking to media, a government official confirmed that the home ministry asked the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) to get the case probed by the CBI.

It should be noted that the CBI operates under the administrative control of the DoPT. Earlier in the day, Pramod Sawant told media that the Goa Police have done a "tremendously good investigation" in the case and have also got some clues.

"But due to the demand of people from Haryana and also Sonali Phogat's daughter, we have decided to write to the Union Home Ministry to hand over this case to the CBI," said the Goa CM.

Sonali Phogat had come to Goa on August 22 and was staying at a hotel in Anjuna. She felt uneasy that night and the next morning, she was taken to the St. Anthony's hospital where she was declared brought dead. Police on August 26 arrested Sudhir Sangwan (Phogat's PA) along with Sukwinder Singh in connection with her murder.

Methamphetamine drugs were allegedly given to Phogat, while she was partying in Curlies restaurant in Anjuna. The restaurant co-owner Edwin Nunes and two drug peddlers were arrested in this case, according to the police..
