1. What is this disease? : Lumpy Skin Disease is a skin disease that is seen in Cattle. It is a Viral Skin Disease that is majorly seen in cows. The lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV) is a virus of the capripoxvirus genus in the poxviridae family. This is a life-threatening disease for cows and till now 50000 cows have died just in Rajasthan. And more than 80000 deaths of cattle have been reported.

2. How does this virus spreads? : The virus is transmitted by insects that feed on blood, like mosquitoes, ticks, and certain species of flies. Lumpy skin disease also spreads through contaminated fodder and water. The disease causes fever, and nodules on the skin and can also lead to death, especially in animals that have not previously been exposed to the virus.


3. When was the first case reported in India? : The first lumpy skin disease case in India was reported on April 23 in Gujarat's Kutch region. Since then, the disease has rapidly spread in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, and Jammu and Kashmir. Now in Maharashtra also cases have been reported for Lumpy Skin Disease.

4. What is the effect of this disease? : "In Rajasthan, the number of death is 600-700 per day. But in other states, it is less than 100 in a single day," said Jatindra Nath Swain, the Animal Husbandry and Dairying Department Secretary. The Centre has begun administering the 'goat pox vaccine' to all cattle in the affected states. The government said that the vaccine is "100 percent effective" against the lumpy skin disease.

 
 


5. Is there a specific vaccine available for this virus? : Recently Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Narendra Singh Tomar launched the indigenous Lumpi-ProVacInd vaccine to protect livestock from Lumpy Skin disease. The vaccine has been developed by the National Equine Research Centre, Hisar (Haryana) in collaboration with Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Izzatnagar (Bareilly). Tomar said He said that there are 30 crore livestock in the country, and considering the plight of mute animals, all possible measures should be taken to provide them relief at the earliest.

Govt. is taking all the necessary steps toward this horrifying disease. Which is causing thousands of cow deaths. The vaccine is here and now, we all are waiting to see the results may this disease vanishes away very soon. And may the cows of India be safe from any kind of virus and disease.
