Yesterday 14th September was a very special day. It was Hindi Diwas. A day to celebrate our राजभाषा (Official Language). And in many offices, organizations, schools, and colleges it was celebrated. Still, many people (Especially the new generation) were unaware of this special day. As they don’t know why we celebrate it, what the significance is, and why knowing the Hindi language can add so much to your life.

Hindi Diwas

In 1949, Hindi has declared the official language of India. And to mark this day, every year on the 14th of September we celebrate Hindi Diwas. Nowadays we see everywhere children speaking in English even if they are at their home. They don’t even know their mother tongue, however, they can speak English very well. Knowing the English language is not wrong and we must as it is the need of the hour, however, treating English as the benchmark of class and status is wrong, and treating Hindi as the language of villagers is also wrong. Hindi is a rich language and it has so much to offer thus celebrating this day, and spreading awareness about the same is also very much important. To pass on this rich culture-based language to the next generation.

Ask any kid who is studying in convent school about Ramdhari Singh Dinkar and Sumitra Nandan Pant and ask them how many poems they know. 90% of kids won’t be able to answer it, and their argument will be, what is the significance of this knowledge for their future? To that my answer will be, that you don’t learn everything just for your career, such rich knowledge polishes your personality. Helps you to stand out in the crowd. And gives you respect as a person who knows the rich language of his country, and the same goes with the native language too.

Nowadays kids and teenagers do not know counting in Hindi, do not know any poem or any literature in Hindi, or even tables in Hindi. Which makes me sad.

And that’s why celebrating this day is very much important. In every school irrespective of which medium it is, Hindi or English or Native. This day will help children to know this beautiful language.

In our school, there were competitions like, “Sahityik Antakshari, Nibandh Pratiyogita, Doha Gayan Pratiyogita, Kavita path, Vad Vivad, and Bhashan Pratiyogita” These all competitions helped us to know and learn the beautiful creations of this language. It helped us in shaping our language skills and it also helped us in standing out in the crowd.

So next time whenever someone asks you which language you know the best, You should be able to name 3 languages together, Your native language, Hindi and English. And for that, this celebration of Hindi Diwas is very much important.

What do you think about this? Do you feel knowing and learning Hindi will help you in any way, let us know in the comments below?
