J&K to have a public holiday on Maharaja Hari Singh's birth anniversary; Son says "I'd like to thank PM Modi"

Srinagar, Sept 16: The Jammu and Kashmir government has decided to declare Maharaja Hari Singh’s birth anniversary a public holiday. Maharaja Hari Singh was the last ruling Maharaja of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir. The last Dogra ruler of J&K had a big role in the accession of J&K with India and in making it the crown of the country.

This came after Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha held a meeting with a delegation comprising prominent political leaders, members of the Yuva Rajput Sabha, civil society members, including the head of J&K Transport Union at the Raj Bhavan on Thursday. He said, "J&K govt has taken a decision to declare Maharaja Hari Singh's birthday as a public holiday. He was a great educationist, progressive thinker, social reformer & a towering man of ideas and ideals".
 
 
"The government has decided to declare Maharaja Hari Singhji’s birthday as a public holiday. Maharaja Hari Singh was a great educationist, progressive thinker, social reformer, and a towering man of ideas and ideals. The public holiday will be a fitting tribute to Maharaja Hari Singhji's rich legacy," the Lieutenant Governor said.
 
"I'm delighted. It happened after a lot of efforts. I congratulate young generation of Jammu that carried forward the efforts. They did it together,nobody opposed," Karan Singh, senior Congress leader and son of Maharaja Hari Singh said.
 
 
Further, he added, "When my sons Ajatshatru & Vikramaditya were members of Legislative Council,they had made the House pass a resolution about the holiday. Nobody carried it forward. I'd like to thank PM Modi,I too had written to him for it".
