PM Modi meets Iran President, reviews Chabahar Port progress

New Delhi, Sept 17: In the first in-person meeting, Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussed with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi bilateral ties, regional developments, including Afghanistan, and reviewed the progress in the development of Chabahar Port on the sidelines of SCO Summit.

This was the first meeting between the Prime Minister and President Raisi since President Raisi’s assumption of office in 2021.
 
The Ministry of External Affairs, in a statement, said, "During the meeting the two leaders discussed many important issues pertaining to the bilateral relationship, and expressed their desire for strengthening the relationship further. Prime Minister highlighted that India- Iran bilateral ties are marked by historic and civilizational connections, including strong people to people contacts."
 
"The two leaders reviewed the progress in the development of the Shahid Behesti terminal, Chabahar Port and underscored the importance of bilateral cooperation in the field of regional connectivity," it further added.
 
It said, "The two leaders also discussed international and regional developments including Afghanistan. Prime Minister reiterated India’s priorities of providing humanitarian assistance to the people of Afghanistan and the need for a representative and inclusive political dispensation in support of a peaceful, stable and secure Afghanistan."
 
President Raisi briefed the Prime Minister on the status of the JCPOA negotiations. PM Modi also extended an invitation to President Raisi to visit India at his earliest convenience.  Referring to Iran's progress in various scientific and industrial fields, Dr Raisi emphasised, "Cruel sanctions could not interrupt the progress of the Iranian nation".
"In this meeting, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced his country's opposition to the imposition of unilateral sanctions by one country against another country, and pointed out the key role and importance of Chabahar Port in the transportation of goods in the region, and said, "The development of this port will contribute to the economic development of the countries in the region", the statement from Iran said.
It also said, "The Prime Minister of India also mentioned the common positions of the two countries regarding the developments in Afghanistan and called for the continuation of Tehran-Delhi international and regional cooperation in this field."
