Hyderabad, September 24: All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Friday said that the K Chandrashekar Rao-led Telangana government must increase the backward Muslim quota to 8-12 percent from the existing 4 percent, citing Sudhir Commission’s recommendation.

The Hyderabad MP said that the current 4 percent quote is “inadequate” when compared to the population and socio-economic status of Muslims in Telangana.

“Telangana Government must increase backward Muslim quota to 8-12 percent as suggested by Sudhir Commission. The existing 4 percent reservation is inadequate when compared to the population and socio-economic status of Telangana’s Muslims,” Owaisi said.

In August 2016, the Commission of Inquiry on Socio-Economic and Educational Conditions of Muslims in Telangana recommended 12 percent reservation or a minimum of 9 percent to the community in social and educational sectors.

In its 860-page report, the four-member commission led by retired IAS officer G Sudhir also recommended that the state government should prepare a sub-plan for Muslims on the lines of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribe Sub-Plans. Set up in March 2015, the Commission had MA Bari, Abdul Shaban, and Amir Ullah Khan besides Sudhir.

The panel also suggested that the government could implement the reservation as it was done in Tamil Nadu. It further suggested the state request the Centre to amend the Constitution to increase the extent of total reservation.
