The morning of Sept 28 didn't rose well for the radical organization as the day began with the news of Central government banning the Popular Front of India ( PFI ) and its associated affiliated fronts for five years. According to the notification issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, the decision was taken based on the report of the investigating agencies. PFI and its affiliate organizations have been declared "unlawful association" under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), said the government.

PFI

But are the possible reasons for the severe crackdown on the radical organization and the intelligence agencies launching a dedicated 'Operation Octopus' against PFI. Here's why the organization has been banned;

1. Political killing & conspiring against the Hindu community

Earlier this month, the Kerala police had arrested Popular Front of India ( PFI ) leader in connection with the alleged murder of an RSS leader SK Srinivasan in Palakkad district. Aboobaker Siddik is the Palakkad district secretary of PFI. He was arrested for allegedly hatching a conspiracy to kill RSS leader SK Srinivasan on Apr 16.

Srinivasan, a former district leader and office-bearer of RSS, was allegedly killed by a group of six people at his motorbike shop in Melamuri on April 16. He was attacked barely 24 hours after PFI leader Subair was hacked to death at Elappully in the district on April 15 afternoon.

Over 20 workers of PFI and those affiliated to the outfit or its political offshoot Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), were arrested in connection with Srinivasan’s killing. However, this is just one of the many examples of PFI's involvement in Political killing and conspiring against the Hindu community.

2. Instigating Muslims across the country

During one of the raids on PFI leaders and members by central agencies, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) recovered a diary from the Chief of PFI, OAM Salam’s close associate, M Mohammed Ismail. Reportedly, the diary mentioned a detailed plan of the radical organization to create a civil war-like situation in India.

Earlier in June this year, the reports of investigation agencies also stated that PFI had held a ‘Civil War’ meeting on Nov 10, 2020. This is the time when there was politically instigated unrest of anti - CAA / NRC protests across country.

As per the reports, the page 15 of the recovered diary, it was mentioned that the ‘nation may witness severe civil war-like NRC, CAA’. The organization had urged the members to increase the strength of the organization and “fight in the course”. Besides, it also asked for “strong suggestions to implement the chaos".

3. Deep involvement in global terrorism

In July this year, the NIA court in Kochi sentenced Midhilaj, U K Hamsa and Abdul Razak in 2017 Valapattanam IS recruitment case. According to the police, the convicted persons were part of the Kannur module of the Islamic State.

Importantly, intelligence agencies estimated that about 40 to 50 individuals from Kannur district had joined the IS in Syria and they were PFI activists. Also one of the suspected terrorists of the Kannur module of the Islamic State, Shajahan Valluva Kandy had told the NIA that he joined the ISIS to establish Islamic Shariah law in the subcontinent. He too was associated with the PFI since 2006, when the outfit was known as the National Development Front.

4. PFI involved in terror funding

The Enforcement Directorate recently attached 23 bank accounts linked to the PFI and 10 bank accounts of PFI’s front organization, Rehab India Foundation. As per the ED statement, quoted in the media, there was a larger criminal conspiracy of PFI and its related entities to raise funds within the country and abroad to carry out various unlawful activities.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA), which raided several locations across Bihar in connection with the Phulwari Sharif terror module case, said that the operatives were suspected to be associated with the PFI, as per media report. The fact to be noted is that the raids that took place on July 14, 2022, in Patna’s Phulwari Sharif area led to the seizure of documents about the radical group’s ‘Mission 2047’ for making India an Islamic state.
