Clash breaks out in Tripura's Majlishpur between Congress & BJP, after announcement of Assembly polls

Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman alleged that when the party’s bike rally reached Tripura"s Majlishpur constituency, the local elected representative and minister himself stopped the rally.

Aizawl, Jan 20: According to the first hand reports of Tripura's local media, a clash broke out between two groups of Congress and BJP at Majlishpur constituency soon after the announcement of the assembly polls on Wednesday (Jan 18). Several people were reported injured.

Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman alleged that when the party’s bike rally reached Majlishpur constituency, the local elected representative and minister himself stopped the rally following which there was an incident of stone-pelting. Besides, the Congress workers were severely attacked at Ranirbazar, where the AICC Tripura in-charge also received injuries and several bikes were vandalized.
 
  
 
 
 
The injured persons were rushed to hospital. He said, prior permission was granted for the bike rally. While, at the same time, there was also a report of an attack on a BJP party office at Majlishpur. Reports suggest that BJP Minister and Majlishpur MLA Sushanta Chowdhury said, “First of all, they did not have any police permission to organize the rally. All of a sudden, the bike-borne Congress workers reached the party office and indulged in vandalism.”
 
Security personnel reportedly resorted to a lathi-charge to disperse the two groups of Congress and BJP. Speaking to the media, Roy Barman said, the full-bench of Election Commission during the recent Tripura visit was informed that the ‘atmosphere is not conducive’ at Majlishpur, Mohanpur and some other constituencies.
