In a statement issued by Raj Bhavan, Governor Koshyari said that he had conveyed his wish to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his recent visit to Mumbai. “It was an absolute honour and privilege for me to serve as the Rajya Sevak or Rajyapal of a great state like Maharashtra – the land of saints, social reformers and valiant fighters,” said Koshyari.

“I can never forget the love and affection I have received from the people of Maharashtra during the last little more than three years. During the recent visit of the Prime Minister to Mumbai, I have conveyed to him my desire to be discharged of all political responsibilities and to spend the remainder of my life in reading, writing and other activities," Koshyari said.

He added, "I have always received love and affection from the Prime Minister and I hope to receive the same in this regard." Koshyari’s tenure as Maharashtra Governor has been marred by a number of controversies. His role as governor was questioned during the early morning oath in November 2019 by Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar.

Even when Eknath Shinde toppled Uddhav Thackeray’s government, the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) questioned the governor’s role in showing promptness for the formation of a new government.

Apart from this, in November last year, Koshyari drew flak from several political parties over his remark on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj being an icon of the "olden days" even as he referred to BR Ambedkar and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari while talking about icons.

''Earlier, when you were asked who your icon is — Jawaharlal Nehru, Subhas Chandra Bose and Mahatma Gandhi used to be the answers. In Maharashtra, you need not look elsewhere (as) there are so many icons here. While Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is of olden times, there are Ambedkar and Nitin Gadkari," the Maharashtra Governor had said.
