CSIR-NIIST, HAL sign MoU to strengthen indigenization in aerospace, defence sectors

The CSIR-National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (CSIR-NIIST) in Kerala inked an MoU on November 2 with Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) in Bengaluru for collaboration in the nation's aerospace and defense sectors, according to NIIST.

NIIST stated that it will work with HAL to boost the nation's aerospace and defense indigenisation and import substitution programs, as envisioned under the Atmanirbhar Bharat plan.

According to the announcement, the MoU, which was signed and exchanged in Bengaluru, covers the development of magnesium and aluminum alloy castings, as well as associated fields for the aerospace and defense industries.
 
According to the statement, the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed in the presence of senior scientists and executives from both organizations.
 
"The MoU allows CSIR and NIIST to collaborate on human resource utilization, facility utilization, technology support services, consultancy services, and collaborative research in the field of light alloys for the design and development of aerospace components and welding."

"The specific areas of collaboration include manufacturing of aeronautical grade magnesium alloy castings using low pressure casting (LPC)process, design and development of filler materials for salvage welding of aluminium and magnesium alloy castings and other areas of research of mutual interest," according to the statement.

According to the release, NIIST Trivandrum, a constituent laboratory of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), is a leading institution engaged in conducting advanced research and development programs in areas relating to effective utilization of the region's resources, which are of fundamental importance to the country.

HAL is a company that designs, develops, produces, delivers, and supports airplanes, helicopters, aerospace systems, and components.
