Ateeq Ahmad has ruled over Prayagraj for close to four decades. He had his family rule there. In a democratic set up, it did not matter who war ruling in Delhi or Lucknow, who was the DM or SSP in Prayagraj, ruler was Ateeq Ahmad only. He being inside jail or roaming outside made no difference to his rule. Unfortunately for him, Yogi became CM and entire game changed. He was shot dead by some unknown small-time offenders while in police control. The same people who would have shitted inside their pants just on the sight of Ateeq Ahmad, killed him.

Ateeq Ahmad

Time has changed . Now there are so many people who are talking of system deterioration because Ateeq Ahmad was killed. Same don who did not care too hoots for system. He was above system. Mulayam Singh Yadav and so many, who shook hands with his dogs even, ensured that as part of appeasement politics.

The don who was above the system, made the best used of lacunae in the system, got killed because of lacunae of same system. If some one is feeling bad, assume that he has guilty conscience.

That reminds me of a real time story when I was posted in one of the Army Equine Studs. We had almost 300 mares for breeding purpose. 299 mares on one side and one mare on one side. No mare dare come near to this mare in paddock. This mare was the strongest one. Syces used to call her – Mardani Ghori (Macho mare – No offense meant to anybody) What was the secret of her strength? She had a simple formula. When the feed was to be served in feeding turf, 10 meters on either side of her, no other mare was allowed to come. If any one came near to her, she will kick and bite violently. So, literally she was eating the rations of three mares. So far so good.

It so happened that during one of the rationing parades, she tried to kick a mare, who evaded the kick and her leg hit one of the wires and got injured. Sutures were put in and she was kept in hospital for some time. As the healing took place, she was brought to paddock. However, at the wound site, she probably had lot of irritation and out of that she bit her own wound and exposed it again.

Again, the same exercise was done and result was same. So, we decided to put a neck collar around her neck so that she was not able to bit her own wound in the leg.

Now, in the paddock, real drama started. She was not able to see back because of neck collar and it put the mental strain along with visibility limitations. Those days when she used to have rations of other mares were gone. She started getting the kicks from other mares, same mares who used to be so scared to go near to her, now started biting and kicking her. Now, no one was scared of her. Even when she was confined to enclosure, other mares jumped the enclosure and kicked her, she just could not defend. She lost condition and the strength, moved to isolation ward but good days were gone for her.

Why did I tell you this real story?

What happened to Ateeq Ahmad? Undisputed and uncrowned king of Prayagraj who made the best use of system by becoming the law maker and shaking the hands with the political elite of the country. Mafia Don, against whom judiciary of the country was not ready to give any judgement, witnesses were not ready to depose and those who deposed were killed. Even when he was inside jail, he ran his terror empire from there only.

So, what is the difference between Ateeq Ahmad and that Mardani Ghori? Are we living in India or in Animal farm where no rule applies or it applies to law abiding citizens only. Who is responsible for it?

If you read the book – Animal Farm by George Orwell, at least you get the message that ordinary citizens are always betrayed by rulers and those who are in power, pervert the democratic promise to the people. This is what is happening to ordinary citizen. People like Ateeq Ahmad make the best use of system to subvert the system for their own benefit.

Let’s move beyond this and look at our responsibility to dump all those who cultivate people like Ateeq Ahmad for their own pursuit of political power. Let’s dump them for good so that no more Ateeq Ahmads emerges. Let each one of them say – Hum Meeti mein Mil Gaye Hein. Let each one realise that he will not be allowed to go beyond the system. Let each one of them realises that India has changed.
