Despite facing negativity, controversies, mixed reviews, and boycott calls, Adah Sharma's recently released The Kerala Story has managed to pull the crowd to the theatres. Interestingly, the movie, which revolves around a group of non-Muslim women who were forced to convert and join the terrorist organisation ISIS, has suppressed Vivek Agnihotri’s The Kashmir Files opening weekend record. The total collection of the movie now stands at Rs 45 crore.
As per the data, the Kerala Story had collected Rs Rs 7.50-8 crore on the opening day, which eventually beats 'The Kashmir Files' who had managed to mint around Rs 3 crore. With that, the movie has become one of the biggest openers of 2023. The Kerala Story has secured the fifth-highest bookings of the year, selling 32,000 tickets in national chains.

The Kerala Story graced screens worldwide on May 5. On May 7, The Kerala Story registered its highest-ever collection (so far) and earned Rs 16.50 crore. The report further stated that the Sudipto Sen directorial garnered over 52.92 per cent occupancy and the collection on the third day of its screening was already 50 per cent higher. The next day, May 8, the controversial film saw a slight drop in collections but still minted Rs 10.50 crore (nett) at the box office in India. This takes the Rs 4-day total collection to Rs 45.75 crore. The Kerala Story will surpass the Rs 50 crore mark today, May 9.
On the other hand, while talking about The Kashmir Files, Anupam Kher's movie collected Rs 8.50 crore on the second day and Rs 15.10 crore on the third day. In comparison to The Kerala Story which stands at Rs 35 crore, the film had earned only Rs 27.15 crore by the end of the first week.
At this point, it should be pointed out that the movie has collected a whopping amount at the box office even after Tamil Nadu and West Bengal stopped screening the movie.
The Kerala Story's collection does make one question about the need for flashy promotions, big names, or any traditional aspects that needed to be there in a film to be successful.
