Again he wrote about the chronic health problem of a senior lady of the host family, and asked Anandibai to send some medicine for her. ( Probably whenever there was a reference to someone's ailment, he would request her to send or suggest medicines, as it was always aatter of pride for him.) He believed in reciprocating, in some way, to people who helped him selflessly.
He did not receive any communication after 6'th of June,he expressed his concern. Mr James probably did not like his decision of leaving India and his resignation. Though he had sufficient money, but may be he thought of working for some time,if money could not be raised. He saw no point in reaching America without sufficient money to support her education. He promised her to communicate if he had to take up some job to collect money.
The next letter is posted from seerampur, there is no clarity of date. As Anandibai was to reach Philadelphia, the letter was posted on Philadelphia address. He was planning to go to Siam ( known as Thailand now ). He wanted to appeal the king for a job,he wanted to work for an year. He was in a dilemma, the choice was difficult. He wanted to reach America as early as possible,at the same time thought, he should not be in a hurry as a little more fund was to be raised. Did not want to go back to his post office job,as he felt hurt by the patronizing attitude of Mr James. He did not approve his boastfulness,it diminished the value of his support and help.
Gopalrao was very rational in his approach but could not tolerate excessive vanity. He worked very hard ,met and appealed many, was successful to a great extent,as it was his dream also to see her earning a medical degree to help society.
The next communication by Gopalrao has a slightly different tone, Anandibai is addressed as my beloved. Date 27/10/1884
He was on the ship, then reached Hong Kong,he could travel free of cost. Anandibai's name was quite familiar to people as she was in news.
Gopalrao reported that people were not happy with Pandita Ramabai's conversion to Christianity. It caused a lot of damage to the country and it's image. People felt Christianity denounces others,it was not fair, he observed.
He shared his observation about the Parsi community,he found them to be helpful,it was a wealthy group of people. The city had tidy and clean tea shops. Variety of food was available. He felt the city was well planned and developed.
