The region has been lashed by incessant rains over the last 24 hours.The incident occurred at 10.30 in the night at a place adjoining Irsalgad in Raigad district. It is a very remote inaccessible area which is hampering rescue attempts.
Rescue operation
Two NDRF teams were conducting the search rescue operations in the morning, and two other teams from Mumbai joined in as well. Four ambulances are ready at the Rural Health Unit in Chauk with the Taluka Health Officer and four doctors.
As per the NDRF, 15-20 houses were buried under the debris after the landslide. At least 48 families are affected due to the landslide in the tribal village.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar is coordinating the relief and rescue operations from the emergency control room in Mumbai. The Raigad police have set up a control room following the incident, the NDRF said. One of the rescuers also died due to a heart attack. Around 75 people have been rescued, so far, Maharashtra deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis said. A few of them have also suffered injuries.
Raigad's superintendent of police Somnath Gharge said that he has issued alerts to all hospitals in Panvel and Navi Mumbai following the landslide to ensure that the injured can receive immediate medical care.

Shinde announces ₹5 lakh compensation
Chief Minister Eknath Shinde reached the site and spoke to personnel engaged in rescue operations. He also announced a compensation of ₹5 lakh each for the families of the deceased and said that the government will bear the cost of treatment of the injured.
IMD issues Red alert
The IMD has issued a red alert for the Palghar and Raigad districts, as well as an orange alert for Thane, Mumbai, and Ratnagiri. Additionally, Raigad will remain on orange alert until July 21, while IMD has issued alerts for the districts of Palghar and Thane till today, July 20. The Palghar district collector has issued a warning, advising residents to stay indoors. Up till July 19, Mumbai was under an orange alert, while Palghar and Raigad, were under a red alert due to intense rainfall.
