"I've not seen the video. This is the first that I'm hearing of it. But as I stated before, our hearts break whenever there's human suffering, whether it's in our neighborhood or across the globe or in the country where we're living" - Eric Garcetti, US Ambassador to India

Imphal, Jul 21: US Ambassador Eric Garcetti issues another round of comments on Thursday (Jul 20) regarding India's internal matter. And this time he was responding to a question on the viral video of two women from Manipur who were paraded naked and allegedly gang-raped. It is to be noted that the question was asked by a newspaper run from West Bengal, a state that has remained stuck in all types of violence since several years.

While responding to the incident, before the commencement of the Parliament's monsoon session, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the incident had shamed 140 crore Indians and vowed that no guilty will be spared and law will act with its "full might and firmness". The incident in a village in Kangpokpi district that was captured in the 26-second video and sparked a nationwide outrage took place a day after ethnic violence erupted in India's northeastern state on May 3 but the horrific footage surfaced only on Wednesday (Jul 19) and became viral after the internet ban was lifted.

Earlier during a media interaction, the US Ambassador Garcetti had said that there has been "so much progress" in the Northeast region, and it's not possible without peace. He had further stated that the US is ready "to assist in any way" if asked in dealing with the situation in Manipur.
