In yet another instance involving animal cruelty which has sent a shock wave across animal lovers, a 35-year-old woman Shabista Suhail Ansari allegedly threw acid on her neighbour's pet dog causing severe burn injuries and damage to the eye of the animal.
The incident unfolded on Wednesday in Malvan and was caught on CCTV at the housing society, which is going viral on social media platforms.
According to reports, the woman attacked the dog named Brownie for chasing some cats she used to feed regularly. Recorded CCTV footage shows the woman approaching the sleeping dog and throwing acid at it. The dog lost an eye in the acid attack. The dog was found by the caretaker, Balasaheb Tukaram, in the evening and rushed to the nearby veterinary clinic.
A case has been registered against her in Mumbai's Malvani police station under section 429 (committing mischief by killing or maiming cattle) of the Indian Penal Code, section 11 (1) (A) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, and section 119 of the Maharashtra Police Act.
In his complaint, Balasaheb Tukaram Bhagat, a resident of the housing society, elaborated on Brownie’s five-year presence within the community and described how Ansari would frequently chase the dog away while tending to the cats she fed.
Malvani police officials said, "According to the complainant, around 12.25 pm on August 16, the accused, residing in Malvani Swapna Purti Apartment in Samna Nagar, threw acid on a dog named Brownie, who was playing with a cat in the society. The dog had hurt the cat while playing, following which out of anger, the woman threw acid at the dog. The whole incident was recorded in the CCTV installed in the building premises, based on which, we have booked the woman.'
After hearing about it, TV actor Jaya Bhattacharya and her team came forward to save Brownie.The dog was taken to Thank You Earth, an NGO established by Bhattacharya, dedicated to the rescue and care of animals in distress. In response to the incident, Bhattacharya and her team promptly notified the police, providing them with a doctor's certificate outlining the extent of Brownie's injuries.
