Lucknow, Jan 15: Renowned Urdu poet Munawwar Rana passed away due to cardiac arrest in Lucknow’s Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences on Sunday. Munawar was 71 and is survived by his wife, four sons, and a daughter.
"He was hospitalised for 14 to 15 days due to illness. He was first admitted to Medanta in Lucknow and then to SGPGI where he breathed his last around 11 pm today," according to PTI.
Born on November 26, 1952, in Uttar Pradesh’s Raebareli, Munawwar Rana is known for his Urdu literature and ghazals.
Munawwar Rana received several allocates, including the the Ameer Khusro Award, Mir Taqi Mir Award, Ghalib Award, Dr Zakir Hussain Award, and the Saraswati Samaj Award. His works have been translated into several languages too.

In 2014, he was also honoured with the Sahitya Akademi Award for his poem, ‘Shahdaba’. However, he had returned the award, alleging ‘intolerance’ in the country.
In 2021, he passed derogatory comments as he compared Maharshi Valmiki to the Taliban. He was booked by the UP Police for his comments against Hindus by drawing false equivalence with the radical Islamic organization Taliban that has captured Afghanistan.
Apart from this, he had also intended to incite violence via a tweet. He had called to demolish the Parliament building and set the godowns for grain storage on fire.
A year after the Ram Janmabhoomi verdict, Rana also went against the then Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi saying “Even a prostitute in India charges more for selling herself than Ranjan Gogoi did.”
