The Oscars 2024 returned on Sunday with Oppenheimer dominating the award ceremony as it was named the best picture along with Christopher Nolan, Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr winning in major categories at the ceremony. But there was so much going on other than artists winning awards. It had turned into a platform for artists to talk about "WAR" and "PROTESTS".

Protests by Pro-Palestine supporters

Ahead of the 2024 Oscars, a protest took place calling for a ceasefire in Gaza at the Cinerama Dome in Los Angeles and made its way toward the Dolby Theatre. It was organized by Writers Against the War on Gaza LA (WAWOG), Film Workers for Palestine, SAG-AFTRA Members for Ceasefire and other groups. This had created traffic where cars were stuck in standstill traffic for almost an hour.

Reports suggest that due to the protests, the broadcast of the awards ceremony was delayed for six minutes. As attendees got out of their cars to head to the venue, some demonstrators started yelling at them.

War, the Talks of the Oscars

Inside the Oscars 2024, talk of the Israel-Hamas war was a major part of the ceremony. Celebrities like Mark Ruffalo, Ramy Youssef, Ava DuVernay, Billie Eilish, Finneas O’Connell and more wore red Artists4Ceasfire pins on the carpet. The red pins, featuring an outstretched hand with a heart on them, show the artists’ solidarity for an end of fighting and humanitarian aid to Palestinian civilians in Gaza.

Notably, Artists4Ceasefire is a coalition of celebrities and industry members who, in a collective effort, signed an open letter urging President Joe Biden to advocate for an immediate cease-fire. The list of nearly 400 signatories includes this year's Oscar nominees Bradley Cooper and America Ferrera, along with prominent names like Cate Blanchett, Drake, Ben Affleck, and Jennifer Lopez.

“We’re calling for the safety of everyone involved, and we really want lasting justice and peace for the Palestinian people,” Youseff told The Hollywood Reporter on the red carpet. “We really wanna say, let’s just stop killing children.”

He also said, "There's a part of you that hopes it doesn't have to get to pins... There's a part of us that hoped we would already be at a cease-fire, and we're not."

Another artist who spoke about ceasefire in Gaza was The Zone of Interest filmmakers won the Academy Award for best international film. "Our film shows where dehumanization leads, at its worst," writer-director Jonathan Glazer said. "Right now we stand here as men who refute their Jewishness and the Holocaust being hijacked by an occupation which has led to conflict for so many innocent people. Whether the victims of October the 7th in Israel, or the ongoing attack on Gaza, all the victims, this dehumanization, how do we resist?"

Another war that was mentioned by the 20 Days in Mariupol filmmakers, who won best documentary feature for their film about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Director Mstyslav Chernov explained that he was honored for the award but is probably the first director to wish he never made their film. “I wish to be able to exchange this for Russia never attacking Ukraine and never occupying our cities,” he said. “I would give up all the recognition for Russia not killing tens of thousands of my fellow Ukrainians. I wish for them to release all the hostages, all of the soldiers who are protecting their lands, all of the civilians who are now in their jails. But I can’t change history; I cannot change the past."

There have been instances where Oscars got political in the past as well but selectiveness has always prevailed as usual!
