What is Vada Pav?

The popular sandwich, in which the crispy and deep-fried potato ball is stuffed between two pav or white buns, is ideally served with hot red chutney and chillies. It is widely sold throughout Maharashtra, both on street stands and in elegant restaurants.

Who invented this street food item?

This street food originated from a street vendor named Ashok Vaidya, who worked near the Dadar train station in the 1960s selling just Vada and Poha. Understanding the workers' need for a quick, pocket-friendly meal, Ashok put Vada in Pav, which was becoming popular and some chutney to enhance the taste

To capitalize on the growing popularity of and interest in Pav among food enthusiasts, he decided to include the Vada inside the Pav and some chutney to enhance the taste. Even though his Vada Pav received a lot of positive feedback, he could not turn his booth into a retail establishment.

While one would assume that his son Narendra would not have opened a store to carry on the family business, interestingly, he continues to operate outside Dadar station’s platform number 1, on the same stand stall that his father worked all those years.

He thought of a way to satiate the hungry workers, and concluded that the ideal dish should be portable, affordable, and easy to prepare.
