New Delhi, Mar 22: The Enforcement Directorate arrested Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the excise policy case on Thursday evening and took him to the agency's headquarters later. AAP workers and leaders rallied behind Kejriwal following his arrest while leaders of the INDIA bloc stood united for the AAP leader. But do you know it was the Congress had made allegations against the Delhi CM in connection to the liquor policy scam in 2023?

Arvind Kejriwal Congress liquor policy scam

A video of veteran Congress leader Ajay Maken in 2023 explaining the role of the AAP-led-Delhi government in the liquor policy scam went viral on social media.

“It is now established that at least a bribe of Rs 100 crore was taken,” he says in the video. Maken had also claimed that AAP and Arvind Kejriwal made 6% kickbacks on sale of liquor and used it against the Congress party during the Goa elections. He also had also accused Kejriwal of planning this scam of Rs 100 crore to defeat the Congress and sought resignation of the Delhi CM and his deputy Manish Sisodia

In March 2023, Congress leaders had staged a protest led by Anil Chaudhary near the Aam Aadmi Party office, demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal following the arrest of his deputy Manish Sisodia by the CBI. The party had said a fair probe would not be possible as long as Arvind Kejriwal remains in power. "The entire Delhi government is fully immersed in corruption. As long as Kejriwal remains in power, there will not be an independent probe in the liquor scam, and therefore, he should also submit his resignation," Chaudhary said.

Further, it had also filed complaint on 3rd June 2022 over "Kejriwal’s fraudulent liquor policy" and urged it to be reversed".

AICC media cell chief Pawan Khera had claimed that the party had forced to BJP-led Centre to probe the Delhi liquor scam. Taking credit for the probe, he had clearly said that "It was Congress which had made the complaint about the scam".

But now Congress is defending Arvind Kejriwal showcasing how confused ideology it has.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi spoke against PM Narendra Modi after the arrest of Kejriwal and accused him of resorting to "dictatorial tactics" to destroy democracy in the country. He said that the opposition INDIA bloc will give a "befitting reply to this".

It is pertinent to mention that Arvind Kejriwal was summoned 9 times starting November 3, 2023 but he skipped all 9 times and was ready to give in this time just few days left for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Apart from Rahul Gandhi, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra termed Kejriwal's arrest as "unconstitutional" and said "such shameful scenes are being witnessed for the first time in independent India".

Delhi Congress chief Arvinder Singh Lovely had said, “They (BJP) are doing this kind of thing as they are afraid of the elections…Congress’ accounts were seized, Hemant Soren was arrested and today in Delhi, just before the elections, the arrest has been done. Using the agencies is shameful.”

Sandeep Dikshit, who was seen accusing Kejriwal of running the liquor scam until last year, also alleged that the BJP was killing democracy by arresting the Delhi Chief Minister.

Arvind Kejriwal's arrest over liquor case scam

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was arrested in connection with the Delhi Excise liquor probe. Kejriwal’s arrest comes in the backdrop of the agency establishing that a certain group of businessmen and politicians from the South benefitted from the now-scrapped Delhi excise policy 2021-22 instead of Rs.100 crore bribes paid to AAP.
