The protests are led by the university’s Social Justice Forum (SJF), an independent student organization advocating the rights of those from ethnic and religious minority backgrounds. According to the reports, demands of SJF include conducting an annual caste census of students and staff, establishing an anti-discrimination cell, organizing an annual 'Ambedkar Memorial Lecture' for anti-caste awareness, revising existing fee payment policy, & advocating for reservations for SCs, STs, & OBCs, etc.

While protesting, the students chose to raise slogans of "Brahmin-Baniyawaad Murdabaad" in the corridors, classes, etc. Several videos of these slogans went viral on the internet with netizens asking why such slogans are being raised specifically against Brahmins for making people listen to their demand for a caste census.

But, the university in a statement asserted that they are "actively working on creating an Equal Opportunity cell, whose role will include making recommendations to the University to improve prevailing practices and policies on inclusion, diversity and sensitisation. It will have faculty, staff, and elected student representatives as members and will be operational soon".
