Security personnel in large numbers have been deployed around the Ansari residence and the burial ground, which is located at a distance of about a kilometre and a half.

In a post on X on Friday, Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA and Mukhtar Ansari’s nephew Suhaib Ansari informed: “My uncle Mukhtar Ansari passed away last night. Tomorrow, at 10 am, he will be buried in our Kali Bagh graveyard of Yusufpur Mohammadabad (Ghazipur). All of you are requested to pray for the forgiveness of the deceased.”

After videos of a massive gathering of gangster-turned-politicians went viral on social media, netizens wondered whether such a crowd would gather for martyrs. However, a section of the internet has already called the gangster-politician a martyr.

Further, some netizens also compared the funeral of Mukhtar Ansari to gangster Vikas Dubey last rites. Notably, Dubey was killed in an encounter in Kanpur in 2020 after eight police personnel were killed and six cops were injured during a police raid to nab the hardened criminal and murderer. When he was killed, his father reacted by saying that "It is for good if he is dead. If police encourage criminals like him, then how will the administration run" and added, "I will not go to his funeral". The mother of Vikas Dubey had also refused to receive the body after post-mortem.

Similarly, NewsBharati had reported that Mohammad Sajid's funeral, an accused in the brutal killing of minor boys in Budaun, Madhya Pradesh, had also drawn a massive Muslim mob.

Convicted in eight cases in the last two years, 63-year-old Ansari was lodged in Banda jail. A five-time MLA from Mau constituency in eastern UP, he was a history-sheeter with a total of 65 cases against him in different police stations of UP and Delhi.

The latest conviction of Mukhtar was on March 13 when he was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Varanasi MP/MLA court in a case related to usage of forged documents for obtaining an arms licence in 1990. It was the eighth case in which he was convicted and sentenced by a UP court in the last two years.
