Thiruvananthapuram , Sept 30 : Clashes broke out between KSU-Youth Congress workers and Students' Federation of India (SFI) members near the Kerala University Men's Hostel in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday evening during a protest march.

The KSU-Youth Congress workers were reportedly marching towards the Accountant General's office, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The confrontation escalated after both sides accused each other of initiating stone-pelting and other acts of violence.

According to KSU-Youth Congress workers, stones and beer bottles were allegedly thrown at them from the university hostel, where SFI members are based. They claimed that they retaliated by throwing the torches they were carrying into the hostel.

SFI members, however, rejected the allegation and blamed the KSU-Youth Congress workers for starting the confrontation. They claimed that stones were thrown into the hostel by members of the protest march, following which SFI workers responded verbally.

The confrontation continued for nearly three hours, prompting the deployment of a large number of police personnel. Police reportedly used tear gas to disperse the groups. SFI members subsequently alleged that the police used excessive force against workers inside the hostel.

Following the incident, SFI members staged a protest outside the University College hostel. Senior CPI(M) leader and former Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan joined the protest along with CPI(M) leaders V Sivankutty and PK Sreemathy, and CPI leader V Joy.

Vijayan alleged that the incident was a pre-planned attack on SFI members and claimed that Congress, Youth Congress and KSU workers had targeted university hostels on earlier occasions.

“It is certain that the Youth Congress attack was part of a pre-planned decision,” Vijayan said, alleging that the latest incident was part of a pattern of attacks against the university hostel.

The SFI and Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) later organised protest marches at different locations across Thiruvananthapuram over the incident.

Both sides have presented conflicting accounts of how the violence began, with each blaming the other for the escalation.
