Tonk , Oct 1: A special SC/ST court in Rajasthan’s Tonk district has sentenced four members of a family to life imprisonment for conspiring to murder a 25-year-old woman who was allegedly killed after she insisted that her partner marry her despite their caste differences.

Four family members

According to the reports , The court convicted Sanjana, her two sons Pradhan and Sawai Ram, and her daughter Sushila in connection with the 2022 murder of Suman, who was from Jaipur and had family roots in Tonk.

According to the prosecution, Suman and Pradhan were in a relationship and later faced difficulties after Suman began insisting that he marry her. Pradhan allegedly avoided the issue because the two belonged to different castes.

The prosecution said Pradhan subsequently conspired with his mother, brother and sister to kill Suman. In 2022, he allegedly called her to their village on the pretext of attending a Shraddh ceremony and made her consume a poisonous chemical.

Pradhan reportedly informed Suman’s brother about her condition three days later and asked him to come to Ajmer, where Suman had died. Her family initially believed that she had died from a snakebite and performed her last rites in September 2022.

The case came under suspicion after Suman’s postmortem report indicated that she had died after consuming a poisonous chemical.

Investigators also found that around Rs 80,000 had been withdrawn from Suman’s bank account using her ATM card, which further raised suspicion against Pradhan.

The case was registered in May 2023 after Suman’s brother filed a complaint. During the investigation, police allegedly uncovered the conspiracy behind her murder.

Sanjana and Sawai Ram were also in judicial custody in Jaipur in connection with another murder case involving Sanjana’s husband, Jagdish. They were subsequently brought to Tonk on production warrants in the Suman murder case.

Special Judge Aarti Maheshwari sentenced all four accused to life imprisonment and imposed a combined fine of Rs 1.35 lakh.

The verdict was based on the statements of 27 witnesses and 37 documents presented before the court.
While delivering the judgment, Judge Maheshwari also included a 10-line poem written by her, reflecting on the murder, betrayal of trust and the role of caste differences in the relationship.
