In a crushing blow to the Congress party’s high-sounding rhetoric on women's empowerment, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has officially dismissed Professor and Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam following a internal inquiry that found him guilty of sexual harassment.
While Congress leaders routinely preach slogans like "Smash the Patriarchy," their own lawmaker was found guilty by an Internal Committee after multiple female students brought forward serious allegations against him. This scandal exposes the blatant double standards of a party whose progressive stance completely crumbles when accountability hits its own ranks.
It should be noted that Eleven students had filed complaints with the university's internal panel alleging sexual harassment against the MP. They alleged that he made inappropriate remarks in class, made unwanted advances at gatherings and engaged in misconduct during academic interactions. Initially, a student shared her account of alleged inappropriate behaviour following viva examinations. The other students shared their ordeals later.
According to a university order dated October 9 and signed by Vice-Chancellor Santishree D Pandit, JNU’s Internal Committee conducted the inquiry and recommended a major punishment. The university said it decided to dismiss Akoijam after following due process and considering the available facts and the committee’s report.
The issue had taken a political turn, with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) staging a protest at the university last month to demand action over complaints it said had been filed by 11 women students.
The student organisation questioned the delay in handling the complaints, which it said had been submitted to the Internal Committee around four months earlier. It demanded a fair, independent and time-bound inquiry, along with transparency and freedom from political influence.
Meanwhile,Akoijam had rejected the allegations, accusing what he described as “racist schemers” of trying to damage his reputation through unverified allegations and lies.
Akoijam taught at the Centre for the Study of Social Systems in JNU’s School of Social Sciences. He was elected to the Lok Sabha from Manipur’s Inner Manipur constituency in 2024 on a Congress ticket.
