New Delhi , October 12 : A Delhi court has convicted former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor Tahir Hussain in a case related to the February 2020 northeast Delhi riots in the Dayalpur area, while acquitting the 12 other accused.
Additional Sessions Judge Praveen Singh convicted Hussain under Sections 147 and 109 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), relating to rioting and abetment of an offence. The court has scheduled November 16 for hearing arguments on the quantum of sentence.

The case involved 13 accused, including Hussain, Mohammad Shadab, Shah Alam, Riyasat Ali, Gulfam, Rashid, Mohammad Rihan, Mohammad Abid, Arshad Qayyum, Irshad Ahmed, Deepak Singh Saini, Navneet and Mehak Singh.

The accused faced charges related to rioting, theft in a dwelling house, and mischief by fire or explosive substances, among other offences. The court acquitted the remaining 12 accused while finding Hussain guilty under the relevant IPC provisions.

The case originated from a First Information Report (FIR) registered at Dayalpur police station following a complaint by Ravinder Kumar, father of Intelligence Bureau officer Ankit Sharma, who was killed during the 2020 riots.

Hussain was suspended by the AAP after his name emerged in connection with the riots.

In a separate case related to Ankit Sharma’s killing, a Delhi court convicted Hussain and four others in July. The court found them guilty of offences including murder, rioting, promoting enmity and assault.

The latest conviction relates to a different case connected to the violence in northeast Delhi.

The northeast Delhi riots broke out in February 2020, resulting in 53 deaths, injuries to several people and extensive damage to public and private property worth crores of rupees.

The violence led to multiple criminal investigations and court proceedings against several accused. The latest ruling marks a significant development in one of the cases arising from the riots, with the court set to consider the sentence for Hussain on November 16.
