New Delhi , October 12 : Fact Check has debunked a viral social media claim alleging that Delhi Police opened fire on protesters in the national capital, resulting in multiple casualties. The claim was circulated by the X handle @indiantiwari01, which uses the display name “Anushi Tiwari” and the bio “Proud Indian”. The account shared a video of clashes and security personnel to support its allegations.
According to official fact-checking reports, the video is old and dates back to 2020. The footage has been circulated out of context to falsely portray police firing during recent protests in Delhi.
Viral Video Dates Back to 2020
Fact Check and Delhi Police examined the viral footage and clarified that it was unrelated to the current events being claimed in the posts. The video was recirculated to create a misleading impression of violence and police action against protesters.
Authorities have urged citizens to verify videos and claims circulating on social media before sharing them, particularly those concerning public order and law enforcement.
Questions Raised Over Social Media Account
The account behind the claim has also drawn attention from digital investigators and online fact-checking sources. Reports shared by independent tracking accounts have alleged that @indiantiwari01 is operated from Pakistan and uses an Indian-sounding identity to influence public perception.
The account has also been linked in fact-checking reports to the circulation of misleading content on other sensitive issues, including defence-related claims and videos falsely associated with security operations in Manipur. However, such allegations regarding the account's origin and operation should be distinguished from the independently stated finding that the Delhi Police firing claim is false.
Authorities Warn Against Spreading Misinformation
According to Fact Check's public communication, the account has a history of circulating old footage and misleading narratives. Authorities have warned that spreading malicious rumours on social media can attract legal action and said strict action is being initiated against those responsible.
The incident highlights how old videos can be recirculated during sensitive situations to create confusion, heighten tensions and undermine public trust in law enforcement.
