Mumbai , October 14 : Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday signed and exchanged a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Government of Maharashtra and the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to strengthen trade, investment and economic cooperation.
The agreement was signed in Mumbai with the UK represented by Jonathan Reynolds, Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Trade. The MoU aims to establish a structured government-to-government and business-facing mechanism to promote bilateral economic ties and facilitate greater trade and investment flows.
The agreement will also support the implementation and utilisation of the UK-India Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) through cooperation in areas of mutual interest. It seeks to create a sustainable pipeline of commercial opportunities by connecting businesses and other stakeholders from Maharashtra and the UK.
Focus on CETA Implementation and Business Opportunities
A key objective of the MoU is to help businesses in both territories realise the benefits of CETA. This will include identifying and resolving barriers that could affect the implementation of the agreement and limit commercial opportunities.
The partnership will also focus on translating CETA's trade facilitation commitments into practical support for exporters. This includes improving the movement of goods and services between Maharashtra and the UK, while identifying and addressing challenges related to bilateral trade, investment and market access.
By strengthening coordination between the two governments and businesses, the agreement aims to make trade-related commitments more accessible and beneficial to commercial stakeholders.
Promoting Bilateral Investment and Market Access
The MoU further seeks to increase awareness of commercial opportunities in both markets through business-to-business engagement and trade and investment promotion activities.
The initiative is expected to encourage closer interaction between businesses, support the identification of potential areas of collaboration and develop a sustained pipeline of commercial opportunities.
Through this framework, Maharashtra and the UK aim to strengthen economic engagement, improve market access and encourage businesses to explore new avenues for trade and investment.
The agreement builds on the broader UK-India economic partnership, with a focus on ensuring that trade facilitation measures translate into practical opportunities for businesses operating in both markets.
