Dhaka, October 15 : Former Bangladesh Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina on Thursday expressed concern over the safety of religious and ethnic minorities in Bangladesh during Sharadiya Durgotsav, alleging continued attacks on Hindu communities, temples and homes since her government was ousted on August 5, 2024.

In her Durga Puja message, Hasina said the festival was being celebrated amid a “deep sense of insecurity” among Hindus and other minority communities. She cited reports of killings, idol vandalism, attacks on places of worship, property seizures, extortion, violence against women and intimidation.

Hasina accused the interim administration led by Muhammad Yunus of weakening the rule of law and failing to ensure accountability for those responsible for violence. She alleged that the lack of justice had increased fear among minorities, political opponents and ordinary citizens.

Recalling Bangladesh's founding ideals, Hasina said the country was envisioned as a nation where Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists and Christians could live with equal rights, dignity and security.

“Religion belongs to each individual, but festivals belong to all. This country belongs to all of us,” she said, reiterating her call for religious freedom and communal harmony.

Hasina also alleged that Awami League offices, businesses and properties had faced attacks, while party leaders and supporters had been subjected to arrests and politically motivated cases since August 2024.

She recalled that the Awami League's 2024 election manifesto had promised to establish a National Minority Commission and enact a Minority Protection Act. She urged party workers and citizens committed to communal harmony to stand alongside Hindu communities and avoid provocations.

Hasina concluded by extending Durga Puja greetings and calling for a Bangladesh where every citizen enjoys equal dignity, security and religious freedom.

Earlier, the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council (BHBCUC) described the arrangements for Durga Puja celebrations under tight security, including police deployment and drone surveillance, as “saddening and unfortunate.”

The council said such conditions were increasingly restricting the religious freedom of minority worshippers and damaging Bangladesh's international image.
