New Delhi , October 19 : The Chief of Army Staff has issued a show cause notice seeking the administrative termination of a Major serving with the 11 Armoured Regiment and currently attached to 23 Grenadiers over allegations of extramarital relationships with the wives of two fellow Army officers.

The notice, dated August 10, was issued under Army Rules 19 and 14. It asks the officer to explain why his service should not be terminated administratively, citing circumstances that make a trial by court-martial inexpedient.

The officer challenged the notice before the Armed Forces Tribunal (AFT), Principal Bench, New Delhi, seeking its cancellation and other relief. However, in an order dated October 14, a bench comprising Justice Rajendra Menon and Lieutenant General CP Mohanty declined to stay the proceedings. The tribunal directed the officer to raise his objections in his reply to the showcause notice and ordered the Army authorities to provide him with copies of the Court of Inquiry findings and the proceedings of the hearing of charge.

According to the application filed through Anand Kumar and Associates, the proceedings originated from a written complaint lodged by the officer’s then-wife in August 2023 with the Additional Directorate General (Discipline and Vigilance) at the Integrated Headquarters of the Ministry of Defence (Army).

The complaint alleged adultery, substance abuse, neglect and extramarital relationships with four women, including the wives of two fellow officers.

In October 2023, Headquarters 55 (I) Mechanised Brigade convened a Court of Inquiry to examine allegations of conduct unbecoming of an officer and a gentleman, including the alleged “stealing affection of brother officers’ wives”.

Additional inquiries were subsequently ordered. The Major alleged that the proceedings violated Army Rule 180 because the women named in the case and their husbands were not summoned or examined despite his repeated requests. He also raised objections regarding the seizure of digital devices, including mobile phones, a laptop and pen drives, and the search of his married accommodation.

The Army framed a tentative chargesheet under Sections 45 and 63 of the Army Act in March 2025, followed by Summary of Evidence and additional proceedings. The officer again sought the examination of the women concerned.
The Army subsequently initiated administrative action instead of proceeding with a court-martial.

The Major also informed the tribunal that he and his wife obtained a mutual divorce on March 30, 2026, through an order of the Judicial Magistrate First Class, Anantnag. According to his petition, the settlement recorded his former wife’s withdrawal of the 2023 complaint, stating that it had been filed unintentionally amid matrimonial disputes and without sufficient grounds.

The officer contends that the showcause notice is legally unsustainable because it relies on inquiry proceedings he alleges were irregular. The matter remains subject to the Army’s administrative process, and the allegations have not been established as proven misconduct by a court.
