The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said the exercise is aimed at ensuring accurate recognition of the identified locations and creating greater public awareness about their names and geographical significance.

According to the Ministry, the identified features include peaks, mountain ranges, passes, glaciers, valleys, rivers, lakes, land areas and other geographical features.

The list includes Atisha Giri, Kanishka Peak, Martand Giri, Zorawar Peak, Rinchen Zangpo, Sakyasri Giri, Marpa Lotsava Ri, Milarepa Kangri, Shiva Ri and Maheshvara Ri among the identified peaks.

Other features include Brangsa Land, Kuksel, Gogra, Dehra Compass, Kumarayana Point, Panglung and Shamal Lungpa. The identified passes include Chapchingal Pass and Shachmirk Pass, while Parpik and Skamri Glacier are among the glaciers included in the list.

The exercise also covers Shkorga Valley, Yangpa River, Guru Rinpoche Lake and Hot Spring, along with other geographical features such as Karun Pir, Drak Karpo and Jolmori.

The formal identification and standardisation of geographical names is part of maintaining official cartographic records and ensuring consistency in the names used for geographical features in government maps and records.

The Survey of India, India's national mapping agency, is responsible for surveying and mapping activities and preparing official maps of the country. Standardised names and representations of geographical features help maintain consistency across official maps and government records.

The latest exercise is significant in the context of Ladakh's geographical and strategic importance. The Union Territory comprises extensive high-altitude mountainous terrain and shares international boundaries.

The Ministry said the 28 locations have been identified in consultation with the Ladakh administration. Their inclusion on Survey of India maps is expected to provide standard references for the locations and improve public awareness of their names and geographical positions.
