The incident was reported from Aravamchal in the Cherupuzha area of Payyannur on the evening of September 30, 2026. According to reports, a group of people identified as CPM workers disrupted and attacked the newly established RSS shakha.
Newly started shakha targeted
The RSS shakha had been started as part of ‘Shakha Karya Vistara’, an organisational expansion programme being undertaken during the RSS centenary year. The session was being held in an area adjacent to the BJP office in Aravamchal.
According to the reports, children were also present at the shakha when the attack took place. Reports have identified the attackers as local DYFI leader Nithin Siddharth and another person named Sharath.
Vishwa Samvad Kendra Bharat shared a post describing the incident as an attack on an RSS shakha in Payyannur and said the session included children. A similar post was circulated by other accounts on social media.
Political tensions in Kannur
The incident comes against the backdrop of a long history of political conflict between CPM and RSS/BJP workers in parts of Kannur district. Payyannur and surrounding areas have previously witnessed political clashes involving cadres of rival political organisations.
The assault on the newly started RSS shakha in Aravamchal is not merely a dispute over a local gathering. The shakha was targeted because it represented the expansion of Sangh activities in an area where the CPM has traditionally maintained a strong political presence.
The incident also highlights the longstanding ideological confrontation between the CPM and the RSS in parts of Kerala, particularly in Kannur district. The attack would amount to an attempt to intimidate workers and obstruct the RSS from conducting its activities because of its ideology.
RSS centenary year expansion
The shakha was part of the RSS’s centenary-year organisational activities. The organisation has been undertaking programmes to expand its shakha network as it marks 100 years since its establishment.
The Aravamchal incident has consequently drawn attention within RSS circles because the attack took place at a newly started shakha and involved children.
