Hyderabad, October 2: Tension prevailed in Dilsukhnagar on Thursday after an unidentified man entered the Santoshi Mata Temple near the Dilsukhnagar bus depot, attacked the priest and damaged the deity.

According to reports, the man entered the temple and assaulted the priest before allegedly striking the idol of Santoshi Mata with sticks Friday. Devotees present at the temple intervened, caught the man and handed him over to the police. Chaitanyapuri police reached the spot and took the accused into custody. A case has been registered and an investigation is underway.

The suspected person has been identified as Mohammed Ansari and alleged that he raised religious slogans while desecrating the deity. However, these specific details could not be independently confirmed from the police information currently available. The police have yet to publicly establish the identity and motive of the accused.

The incident has revived concerns over the security of Hindu places of worship in Hyderabad. It comes against the backdrop of other recent incidents involving alleged desecration of Hindu temples in Telangana. In January 2026, police arrested a man identified as Altaf in connection with an alleged desecration incident at the Katta Maisamma Temple in Hyderabad and registereda case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

The latest incident also assumes a political dimension because of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy's earlier controversial remarks about the relationship between Congress and Muslim voters. During campaigning in November 2025, Reddy said, “Congress means Muslims, and Muslims mean Congress,” while also saying that Hindus and Muslims were equal under his government. The remarks drew criticism from opposition parties.

More recently, Reddy's September 2026 remarks contrasting Lord Ram and Lord Shiva have again triggered a political controversy, with BJP leaders accusing him of creating divisions within Hindu society. Reddy's reported remarks included the description of Shiva as the deity of the poor and Ram as the deity of the rich.

The Santoshi Mata temple incident is therefore likely to become another flashpoint in Telangana's political debate over religious sentiments, temple security and allegations of minority appeasement. The immediate issue, however, remains the police investigation and determination of the accused's identity, motive and the precise circumstances surrounding the alleged desecration.

The authorities are expected to make the findings of the investigation public and take action under the applicable law.
